LPN, RN and Nurse Practitioner Are Different Professional Paths

LPN, RN and nurse practitioner describe distinct professional authorizations. Experience in one role can inform a new direction, but it does not automatically grant the next credential.

Name the profession before planning the move

In New York, practical nursing and registered professional nursing have separate licensing requirements. Nurse practitioners need NYSED certification and registration in a specialty, in addition to current New York RN licensure and registration. These are regulatory distinctions, not simply levels on an employer pay scale. NYSED LPN license requirements ↗ NYSED nurse practitioner certification requirements ↗

If you are exploring nursing for the first time, identify the role you actually mean. If you already practice, identify what would change: professional authorization, clinical specialty, work setting or leadership responsibility. Each has a different preparation route. A new unit assignment is not the same decision as becoming an NP.

For an RN route, verify the program and the pathway

NYSED’s RN guidance addresses acceptable nursing education, required coursework, examination and application routes. It also distinguishes licensure from the current registration needed to practice. Check the route that matches your education and licensing history rather than copying a checklist written for someone else. NYSED RN license requirements ↗

Ask a prospective school which precise licensing requirement its program is intended to satisfy, and verify that statement with the regulator. An appealing course name, a general healthcare degree or an employer’s training opportunity does not establish that it is a license-qualifying nursing program. Keep the answer in writing before committing money.

New York registered nurse review categories: acceptable education and coursework, examination evidence, application pathway, and license with current registration. This is not a complete eligibility checklist.
A review map, not a complete licensing checklist. NYSED determines individual eligibility; employer selection and role authorization remain separate.

A degree timeline can come from different authorities

New York’s RN page notes a regulatory amendment effective April 29, 2026 concerning the BSN-in-10 requirement and exemptions. Separately, a dated Northwell Med Surg posting in Manhasset describes its own BSN preference and education conditions. Do not replace either source with a blanket statement that every nurse has the same degree deadline. NYSED RN license requirements ↗ Northwell Registered Nurse, Med Surg, requisition 197742 ↗

When a timeline matters, record its issuer: state rule, hiring requirement, program condition or personal plan. Then ask when the clock starts and which exceptions or alternatives the actual authority recognizes. If two requirements appear to conflict, ask both authorities about their own scope instead of assuming the longer period is automatically allowed.

Consider specialization and leadership separately

Northwell lists nursing settings and specialties including ambulatory care, clinical informatics, home care and critical care. That variety supports exploring more than one kind of RN work; it does not mean every RN can move into every listed position without additional preparation. Northwell nursing career specialties ↗

For a specialty move, ask about relevant experience, education, supervised orientation and how readiness will be assessed. For leadership, ask about responsibility for staffing, coaching, quality and operations. For an NP route, start with specialty certification requirements. Keeping these questions separate makes career conversations more useful than asking which title is “next.”

Build a two-column plan: evidence already held and evidence still needed. Include your own verified credential status, relevant non-confidential examples of work, and the exact requirement that remains uncertain. Let a regulator resolve licensing questions and an authorized employer contact resolve vacancy-specific conditions. This article is career orientation, not permission to practice or professional licensing advice.
