Being strong at the technical work and being ready to lead people are related but different questions. A credible leadership plan shows how you support the work of others.

Look for the new accountability

A managerial role can add responsibility for staffing, resources, development and service performance. The BLS medical and health services manager profile describes planning and coordinating healthcare services, with duties that vary by setting. It is a national occupation overview, not a Northwell promotion standard. BLS Medical and Health Services Managers ↗

When comparing a leadership role with your current work, ask what decisions the new role owns. Does it allocate resources, coach staff, coordinate across teams or oversee a service? A title containing lead, supervisor or manager does not tell you the whole answer. Read the individual description.

Clinical or technical credibility may be important, yet it does not by itself demonstrate every management capability. Equally, a management degree does not replace a professional credential where the role requires one. Keep both sets of evidence visible.

Build evidence around the work of others

A useful leadership example explains how you helped a team achieve a result. Identify the shared objective, your actual authority, how you listened or clarified responsibilities, and how the outcome was evaluated. Be precise about what you led and what you contributed as a team member.

You do not need to invent a management title to describe leadership behavior. A permitted coordination task or training contribution can demonstrate relevant capability, provided you do not overstate your authority. Ask a supervisor which development opportunities are appropriate in your current role.

Avoid confidential personnel examples. You can discuss a process improvement without exposing a colleague’s performance or private information. A credible example respects the people involved and stays within the information you are authorized to share.

Read a career story for its learning questions

Northwell’s 2023 nursing leadership article describes individual experiences with mentorship, education and opportunities to lead. It is useful human evidence, but it does not define a universal sequence or guarantee access to a program. Northwell nursing leadership story, May 8, 2023 ↗

Ask what kind of learning the story suggests: communicating expectations, supporting development, understanding operations or working across disciplines. Then compare those questions with the actual role you are considering. Do not collect courses simply because a successful person mentioned one.

If you are deciding between deeper specialization and management, compare the daily work rather than prestige. You may prefer technical expertise, teaching, coordination or formal people responsibility. Those can be different career directions rather than steps that everyone must take in order.

Prepare a development conversation with three examples

Bring one example of your technical or professional reliability, one of helping others succeed and one area where you need development. Explain the evidence behind each. Ask what the target role would require beyond those examples.

Agree on a next step with a specific outcome, such as learning a defined planning process, receiving feedback on a presentation or contributing to an approved project. Confirm the scope and supervision. A development opportunity should not become an assumption that you have authority to make decisions outside your role.

Finally, ask how readiness will be assessed for the actual opportunity. A personal plan can guide effort, but selection remains an employer decision. The strongest preparation is honest about both demonstrated capability and the work still needed, without treating years of service alone as a leadership qualification.
